Patti Hughes Memorial Scholarship

In memory of Patti Hughes, her family has established a memorial scholarship at Hayfield Secondary. Patti Hughes had two daughters in Hayfield Chorus, both of whom were in chorale at the time of her death from cancer. Patti’s love for our students and dedication and support of Hayfield Chorus will live on through this scholarship and will be used to assist college-bound seniors.

The first recipients of the Scholarship were Kim Chenoweth and Tom Miller, who performed together at the end of the year concert.

Donations (check or money order) should be made out to Hayfield Choral Boosters with "Patti Hughes Scholarship Fund" in the memo. Your donation is tax deductible and will benefit many Hayfield students in years to come. Each year, the Hayfield Chorale holds a Showcase fundraiser to benefit the scholarship fund. Hayfield Chorale held this year’s Showcase on May 21, 2008 with the theme Haunted Showcase.

The seniors awarded the scholarship in the name of Patti Hughes are announced at the Senior Awards Ceremony in June.

VMEA Robert Stamback Honors Choir Memorial Scholarship
The VMEA Robert Stamback Honors Choir Memorial Scholarship Award, established through donations given in his memory, is to be presented annually to a deserving choral student selected by the Memorial Scholarship Committee, in agreement with the Honors Choir Chairman and VMEA President.  The Stamback family requests that the scholarship be awarded as an annual $100 financial assistance to an Honors Choir member.  Robert Stamback was active in the establishment of the VMEA Honors Choir and was an outstanding choral director at Tucker High School in Richmond and Lake Braddock High School in Fairfax County.  He was also a past president of VMEA and VCDA.  His enthusiasm and passion for music has had a lasting impact on music education in Virginia.

REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION

1.  Each applicant must be a senior who has been enrolled in a school choral music program for a minimum of two years, receiving credit for participation.

2.  Each applicant must submit three (3) recommendations; one must be from the student’s current choral director, one from an academic teacher or private voice teacher, and one from a school administrator or guidance counselor.

3. The choral director of each applicant must include a statement indicating how the scholarship would be of financial benefit to the student and/or choral program.  (The main purpose of the scholarship is to assist the student/parent with the participation fee, especially when the school or choral program cannot do so).

4. The choral director of each applicant must be a member of VMEA.

APPLICATION SUBMISSION and SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

Applications are only available on the VMEA Honors Choir website (www.vmea.com) for downloading and must be submitted with recommendations two weeks prior to Honors Choir Auditions in the fall.  (see application).

To be considered, applicants must be selected as an Honors Choir participant.  The scholarship recipient will be selected prior to the due date for the final Honors Choir payment.

The $100 scholarship will be remitted to the Honors Choir Chairperson in the name of the recipient (not to the individual or school).

Notification will be sent to the recipient, the choral director, the school principal, the school division superintendent, VMEA Executive Board, and the VCDA President.  The scholarship recipient will be recognized at the Honors Choir performance during the VMEA Conference.
